Excerpts from River's Journal

Day 153
Midday

I slumped down into the blistering sand to lean against a rubbled ruin while I stared through squinted eyes out at the bleary landscape of Tanaris. It was a dusty blazing hot afternoon and the sky threatened us with another awful sand-storm to impede our journey. I was briefly startled from my reverie when a shadow loomed over me. I glanced up to see my companion traveling companion, a brilliantly colored rosy tall-strider. He gracefully moved to my side all the whilesquawking out his complaints about the heat and sand. As per his usual prima-dona routine, he began to preen the debris out of his feathers. He made verbally sure I was aware of his disatisfaction with our present locale.

He and I, along with a crazy frosty mage, had been traveling together these many years. I stared at him for a long while as he repeatedly dug his large beak into his mass of feathers straightening out his ruffles. “Hill-Top Noranche” was his stage name back in our circus/performing days. His name sake was a popular resort for travelers seeking an entertaining diversion from the world. People would come from all over to see the brightly colored Mazzaranche tall-strider, since he was one of the last remaining of his flock.

These days, I just call him "Hilto’n" for short. After Darkmoon routed out our circus summarily putting us out of business, we were all summarily put to pasture, so to speak. Our defunct circus just dropped him off in the middle of Mulgore to fend for himself, having previously known only the comforts of being an entertainer. Life by himself in the wild was unfamiliar to him and he was bereft and lonely when I found him. He gladly welcomed a life traveling with this old trick-shooter.

As I gazed at him through the swirling windy sand, he stood beside me proudly and regally watching out. I have been surpised by his transformation into his new life as a hunter companion. He protects me and I care for him. Perhaps his "prima dona-ness" explains his tenacity as sometimes he is a force to be reckoned with. I am reminded about those days when we were performers and how utterly once beautiful and pristine his feathers and talon nails were, prime and polished. Now, he is slightly tattered and scarred from fighting and traveling. Though a seemingly "showy" type bird, Hilto'n has a warrior's heart and seems genuinely content.

Life is just flowing along and seems to change things. I was once The Riverhawk: Trick Shooter Now, Hilto’n and me, we are just trying to figure it all out from one day to the next.
