sand moved like warm velvet between her toes, the last of the days heat clinging to the memory of morning as the moon started her gentle assent in to the gathering obsidian night. her eyes clear and grey, piercing the mist that gathered on the shore, the gentle lapping of waves a heart beat of the earth. ships mored in the shallows sounded mast bells that rang clear into the night, something was moving through the water.

turning to the sea, she waited. the simple wooden box now suddenly heavy in her fingers, the weight of it's contents dragging on her very being. she thought back on the events which brought her to be here, memories thick as the mist which drowned the moonlight. a blade, an alter, a white candle burning ...

something came ashore

"you maaake choic-ssse?"

she nodded in reply, holding the box in an out stretched arm

"ahhh .... you make good choic-sssssse .... graaaccccccioussss lady guide yoooou"

a scale encrusted hand closed about her own, lifting the weight from her fingers. the figure bowed with mocking grace and turned to leave, a trail of glittering scales followed in it's wake.

the grey eyes misted, tears prickled at their corners and forward she slumped, shoulders heaving with effort. the sand was her bed that night, when morning came and mist retreated the clear light of day stirred her from her troubled dreaming. her stomach lurched as she thought back on the night before

"what have i become" she murmured softly, gazing out over the azure water, it's innocent ripples and the steady heart beat of the waves she felt suddenly alone. uneasily she stood, sand cascading from the folds in her robes. slowly she moves down the beach, hours pass as she inches along, lost in a wild maze of thought. sand moved like warm velvet between her toes, the last of the days heat clinging to the memory of morning as the moon started her gentle assent in to the gathering obsidian night.
